In The Spirit #Round Robin

In the Spirit of Christmas giving--a gift for my readers.

An excerpt from my novella, set in the mountains above Forest Falls, California.

It began snowing at one in the afternoon on Christmas Eve day, but Meredith hard at work in front of her computer screen, barely noticed it.

At the rate she was going, she could expect to be finished with the final draft by New Year’s Eve. Funny, she had really expected to be distracted by Viktor’s presence in the cabin, but instead it had given her peace of mind, a comfort she’d almost forgotten.

It made her think of their first year of marriage when she was still writing short stories and Viktor was at work on his second doctorate.

They’d turned the second bedroom in their Upland apartment into an office, and every evening after pizza or Chinese or the occasional home-cooked one dish meal, the two of them had worked at the writing, working from card tables pushed together in the center of the room. Now when she thought about it, Meredith realized those had been the best times.

It was the sweet scent of roast turkey that finally brought her out of the den around four o’clock. “I thought you were saving the bird for tomorrow’s dinner,” she said, admiring the table setting.

Considering that she only had mismatched plates and cups here, Viktor had managed to create a nice effect. He had sprinkled red and green paper circles created with a paper punch on the tablecloth and a vibrant red poinsettia graced the center of the table. It looked like he hadn’t been kidding about acquiring some skills after their breakup. He had certainly never made himself handy in the kitchen before then.

“I thought we’d celebrate early,” he answered, setting a covered dish next to her plate. “I hope you like it. There’s turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry dressing, green beans and cherry pie for dessert.”

“I hope it tastes as good as it sounds,” Meredith said, sliding into the chair across from him. “I’m famished.”

Viktor would probably never win any cooking awards, but judging by the aroma, the meal was almost as good as if Pippa had cooked it. Meredith insisted on helping with the dishes and they went into the living room to unwrap the presents.

He seemed generally pleased with the inkwell and Meredith exclaimed repeatedly over the red sweater he’d given her. After a while, Viktor switched on the Christmas tree lights, and she selected a mix of Christmas music on her iPad.

Wine glass in hand, Meredith lounged on the couch, feeling more relaxed and content than she could remember feeling in a very long time. Viktor, sprawled comfortably on the couch next her, said, “I’m really glad to be here, Meredith, I’m not a sentimental guy, but spending the holidays alone—let’s say I’m glad I didn’t have to do it.”

“I know,” she agreed, and her hand slipped readily into his. “I’m glad, too. I thought I it would be easy to tune out the world, but the idea of being alone for Christmas was just too bleak.”

She turned to him with a sad little smile, “Who would’ve thought we could get along after all that has happened that we could talk, be friends, even live under the same roof and not spend every waking minute fighting?”

He placed his index finger under her chin and turned her face to look at him. “Or maybe we both still care a lot more than we are willing to admit.”

Everyone has experienced a broken-heart during his or her lifetime.  And everyone should have a second chance to rekindle, or find, a new true-love during the Holiday Season.  Even if that very special someone is a Zombie.

My current release: "Here Today, Zombie Tomorrow" features Meredith Misso (newly reanimated and still adjusting to her not so vegan world), **INSERT THE NAME OF MEREDITH'S PET A COMMENT **  (her pet teddy-bear hamster), and Viktor ( her soon-to-be ex-husband, who has secrets of his own).

Pinterest and the Tech Savvy Writer

Unfamiliar with Pinterest?

Pinterest is a social bookmarking site where users collect and share photos or images of their favorite events, interests, and hobbies. One of the fastest growing social media networks online, Pinterest is the third largest social networking site, behind only Facebook and Twitter.

What can Pinterest for you as a writer? Pinterest is the virtual "bulletin board". A bulletin board where readers gain a glimpse into you, the writer. In photos of your book covers, links to your blog/podcasts, or post your calendar of upcoming events, your readers get to know you. You can also save images to  a board.

These images could include pictures of a place in the world where you have set previous novel(s) as well as your most recent novel, or works-in-progress.

You may also have private boards, for your eyes only. On these boards you can post inspiration for your work-in-progress. And pictures of items: clothes, scenery, houses, etc. –– that relate to your book. Refer to this board when you have an attack of writer's block, need inspiration, have lost your way along the slippery path to 'the end'.

Tech challenge?  Here's how you get started:

  • Register@ Pinterest.com. You will need a Facebook or Twitter account. (The site will import your friends from these social networks.)
  • Receive an invitation to join by clicking the red button on Pinterest.com.
  • Decide on a topic for each of your boards.
  • Give it a name that is both descriptive and intriguing.
  • Pictures for your boards can come from your personal collection, those found on the Internet, or those from someone else's board this is called a "re-pin". This 're-pin'links back to the person you borrowed the picture from. This sharing is what turns Pinterest into a social site, taking it to a higher level than that of online scrapbooking.
You can now link your pinned images to your Facebook page, fan page, website, blog, Twitter, publishers page, whatever social media sites you currently have.

Just as you would friend-users on Facebook, find people's boards to follow. Mention your Pinterest Board on a regular basis, once again linking it to other network sites.

Remember Pinterest does not host conversations. Visual images are the only connection. Make certain you updated your boards on a regular basis. This can be once a week or twice a month – – whatever fits into your schedule.

Pinterest is like any other social networking site. It involves a certain amount of effort and time to start up, commitment to keeping it up, and willingness to promote your latest release.

Right Brain vs Left Brain

I was reading an article about how the right brain performs certain functions, and the left brain specialized in other tasks. No, I haven't been living beneath a rock. I'm aware that this is common knowledge, and an accepted scientific fact. The right brain controls the left side of the body, and the left brain regulates the right side.

What about our ears?

Are they exactly the same?

Or do they hear things differently?

Scientists had long assumed that our ears were the same and that decoding sound took place entirely in the brain, with signals relayed in the appropriate side. According to Marilyn von Savant, we now know that auditory processing starts in the ear. For example, the right ear is geared more toward speech, and the left ear is attuned more to music. (Children with right-ear hearing impairment have more trouble in school than those with left-ear loss.) So if you are listening to music with a single earphone, you might want to put it in your left ear. But for learning a language, or listening to an audio book, it might help to keep the earphone in your right ear.

Halloween in the Quirky Suburbs of SoCal!

While other little girls played with Barbie dolls and latest version of baby 'cry and wet', I collected Universal Monster Collectibles and stayed up late at night to watch the horror host, "Moon-a-Lisa" introduce the classic Universal Studio Monster (black and white) movies.

One of my favorites was the 1932 version of The Mummy.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, I've created a plot summary:While other little girls played with Barbie dolls and latest version of baby 'cry and wet', I collected Universal Monster Collectibles and stayed up late at night to watch the horror host, "Moon-a-Lisa" introduce the classic Universal Studio Monster (black and white) movies.

One of my favorites was the 1932 version of The Mummy.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, I've created a plot summary:

In 1921 a field expedition in Egypt discovers the mummy of ancient Egyptian prince Im-Ho-Tep, who was condemned and buried alive for sacrilege. Also found in the tomb is the Scroll of Thoth, which can bring the dead back to life. One night a young member of the expedition reads the Scroll out loud, and then goes insane, realizing that he has brought Im-Ho-Tep back to life. Ten years later, disguised as a modern Egyptian, the mummy attempts to reunite with his lost love, an ancient princess who has been reincarnated into a beautiful young woman.

Yes, a new version was made in 1998.  However, I prefer Boris Karloff, and the stylized special effects. The flashback scenes in ancient Egypt were designed to resemble a silent film, with no dialog, exaggerated make-up and gestures, and a faster camera speed, to suggest the great antiquity of the events portrayed.

And, if you are an avid fan of this genre, you will know that this is the only Universal monster of the time without a fictional antecedent. Large segments of the movie are scene-by-scene parallels of the movie Dracula (1931). An ankh symbol (the ancient Egyptian glyph for "life") is substituted for the crucifix of the earlier movie. Even Edward Van Sloan's character, Dr. Muller, is quite analogous to his Dr. Van Helsing from the vampire film.

So, it comes to no surprise that I really, really look forward to Halloween.  I throw a 'pre-Halloween' Spooktacular party for all of the youngsters in my family.  This year: Bloody Fingers (lean franks in a bun), Cat's eyes (glowing yellow jigglers with a sliver of a red grape), goblin toes, bat cupcakes, and bubbling witches' brew. (Visit my Pinterest boards for more info).

This is why I penned my Fun & Sassy Fantasy series.  I wanted to have a good time.  And more importantly, I wanted my readers to share in the fun!  My next novella, "Bell, Book, and Gargoyle" is set in Hollywood.  And "Walk Like An Egyptian" plays homage to my favorite Universal Studio classic.

Since I reside in Southern California, I can spent a day or two at Universal Studios.  I'm sorry so that much of the back lot was destroyed in a fire several years ago.  However, the pond that doubled for a Louisiana swamp in The Mummy's Curse, and provided close-up scenes while filming The Creature from The Black Lagoon, is still part of the guided tour.

I hope you enjoy my current release: "Here Today, Zombie Tomorrow" #10 on this weekend's Holiday list of most downloaded free novels on Amazon.  I am also being interviewed by
I.B. Nosey, reporter on October 30th (http://feelingnosey.blogspot.com).  Please to login and participate in the fun (I.B. did mention prizes).

And, in case you are wondering. . . yes, I do collect Monster High Dolls :-).  (I am still searching for the Zombie doll).
